Is Neoboletus Luridiformis Edible?

Neboletus luridiformis (Neoboletus erythropus – Scarletina bolete) is an excellent edible!

However, beware of the risk of poisoning, this mushroom is toxic when raw and can cause digestive disorders that will appear several hours after consumption.

So be sure to cook it well before eating it.

How To Identify The Neoboletus Luridiformis?

This bolete can be confused with other boletes. However, you can quickly identify it with the following criteria:

Identification

  • Cap: It measures between 4 and 8 inch. Its color is brown with ocher tones on the edges. Its tubes are orange to red.
  • Stem: its stem is fleshy. It has a beautiful yellow color and is covered with many fairly dense red dots.
  • Flesh: its flesh is bright yellow and turns blue very quickly when touched or cut.
  • Smell: its smell is quite neutral.
  • Season and habitat: it is most often found between May and June and likes acid soils.

Look Alikes

The most risky confusion can be with the Satan’s Bolete (Rubroboletus satanas). However, it does not have the same habitat or the same growing period. And he has a rather clear, dirty-looking hat.

Scarletina Bolete (Neoboletus Luridiformis) Recipe

You must cook this bolete for at least 20 minutes to remove its toxicity! It’s a good edible!

To cook it, we recommend avoiding garlic and strong condiments. So, here is a simple recipe to really appreciate it:

  1. Fry half a chopped shallot in a frying pan in a little olive oil.
  2. Meanwhile, cut your bolete into strips, which will gradually turn blue.
  3. Add your boletes to the boiling pan and watch the color change, they should turn yellow again. Cook them for 5 minutes on each side.
  4. Continue cooking over low heat for 10 minutes.
  5. Add a spoon of cream at the end of the preparation.
