My Hedgehog Mushroom Is Orange.

If your mushroom has spines, but has a slightly unusual color, then it’s probably another variety of Hedgehog mushroom!

Indeed, there are many different Hedgehog mushrooms, of which the 2 best known species are the Common Hedgehog mushroom (hydnum repandum) and the Terracotta Hedgehog (hydnum rufescens) which we are going to talk about here!

The Terracotta Hedgehog is different, because it is finer, less fleshy and above all it has a beautiful rusty color verging on orange and red.

Congratulations, you just found the Terracotta Hedgehog mushroom! In addition, be aware that only the common Hedgehog mushroom is referenced on our Mushroom Maps. Go take a look!

Is The Terracotta Hedgehog Edible?

Yes, it is! It is just as edible as its cousin! The big difference is that this one is less fleshy so you have to find more for the same weight. But when you love, you don’t ask yourself these questions, do you?

It is cooked the same way as its cousin.

What Else Should You Know About The Terracotta Hedgehog?

Apart from the fact that it is a little different from the common Hedgehog mushroom, you should also know that it grows in slightly different biotopes and above all, it does not grow at the same moment !

In general, you will be able to find it (hydnum rufescens) from the beginning of October, when its cousin will arrive rather at the end of October! This will therefore allow you to make an early harvest of Hedgehog mushrooms! Awesome, right?!

  1. Thanks so much for this post! I found these mushrooms in southern VT in early October. I identified them as hedgehogs but saw only small mentions in my books that they could be apricot/orange/salmon colored but no identification of species. Thanks to your post, I now know exactly what I found.
